Abstract The present paper aims at studying the influence of burner parameters with a separated jet configuration, namely nozzles diameters and separation distance between the jets, on the flame characteristics (lift-off positions of flame and flame length). The experimental layout considers the use of OH-chemilumenescence to measure the flame characteristics for different combinations of processing conditions. The predictive analysis is based on a neural computation that considers the correlations between the inputs and the outputs of a combustion system using a configuration of separated jet. The predictive analysis show that a good agreement is found between numerical and experimental results in the case where the predictions are within the process window. The exploration of other process parameter combinations beyond that window gives less convincing results. This is mainly attributed to the fact that steady state characteristics are predicted numerically whereas it is expected experimentally that some of burner parameter combinations can lead to an increase of the parameters characterizing the flame.

Modeling CO[subscript 2] Chemical Effects on CO Formation in Oxy-Fuel Diffusion Flames Using Detailed, Quasi-Global, and Global Reaction Mechanisms

Interest in oxy-fuel combustion as one of the leading carbon capture technologies has grown significantly in the past two decades. Experimental studies have shown higher CO concentration in oxy-fuel diffusion flames than in traditional air-fuel flames of both gaseous and solid fuels. The higher CO concentration changes the flame profiles, and it may have impacts on pollutants formation. This pa...

experimental study of cellular instabilities in non - premixed flames

A systematic experimental study was performed to elucidate the conditions for which cellular patterns of diluted hydrogen diffusion flames near extinction were observed. The formation of cellular instabilities was studied for several burners: jet burners (axisymmetric jet and two-dimensional jet) and a novel one-dimensional burner. The fuel and oxidizer Lewis numbers and the initial mixture str...

Simulation of Cup-Burner Flames in Microgravity

The extinction process of cup-burner flames under normal-gravity conditions were previously studied. As the low-speed diffusion flames behave differently in microgravity compared to those on earth, it is important to understand the structure of cup-burner flame and its extinction characteristics under 0g conditions. A numerical study was performed in the present paper using a time-dependent, ax...

Gravity Effects Observed in Partially Premixed Flames

INTRODUCTION Partially premixed flames (PPFs) contain a rich premixed fuel–air mixture in a pocket or stream, and, for complete combustion to occur, they require the transport of oxidizer from an appropriately oxidizer–rich (or fuel–lean) mixture that is present in another pocket or stream. Partial oxidation reactions occur in fuel–rich portions of the mixture and any remaining unburned fuel an...
